Succeeding with Difficult Students

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

Reaching out to difficult students is definitely a serious challenge. These are the students who are continuosly disruptive. They are not only distruptive once in a period or day, they try to rock your boat, intentionally often. These are students with whom your regular classroom management effort don’t work.

Many times it only takes this one student to stop your entire class from functioning, to get on your last nerve, or to stop you from reaching your goal for that class. It is often this one student who prevents you from meeting your daily and even your weekly objectives. The disruptive behavior of just one student can stop you from teaching and can stop the other students in your class from learning. This one student can keep you from doing a good job at what you love. Moreover, what about more than just that one…could be diastrous. (Continue Reading …)

Laughter is a balm for the challenges in life.

My prayer is that you be blessed with a peaceful, prosperous, and productive year. I thank you for dedicating your work to touching the lives of our troubled youth. Some will appreciate your work now while others won’t appreciate you until they look back on this time years from now.

Know that you are touching the lives of others forever; therefore; SMILE and be pleased with yourself. Proverbs 22: 6 says, “Train them up in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.”

Only God knows what will happen in their lives in between that time. They will have your words of encouragement always whispering in their ears coupled with the skills, morals, and values they learn both at home and inside the wall of where ever it is you work. The lessons our students learn about life will be the lessons well learned, lessons to pass to their children. I challenge you to touch them while you can and give them positive and constructive words while you have them in your earshot.

Teacher’s Meditation: …for my heart REJOICED in all my labour and this was my portion of all my labour. Ecclesiastes 2:10
If you haven’t reached it already, as you develop experience, skill, and knowledge in touching the lives of your students, you will reach the place where the fruits of your labors are sheer joy. You will come to find joy despite the challenges and tumult of the profession.

The Power is in Your Tongue

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

Teacher’s Meditation: “The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.” Proverbs 11: 17

In other words, a person that shows kindness benefits his or her own self. Whereas a person who is cruel to others brings trouble on himself. Thus, as educators we have the power to take away hope from our students. As nurturer’s of the next generation we have in our power to heal or hurt them. We have the power to improve their quality of life. We have within our hands and in our tongues the power to enhance generations. We have the power to transform their minds both now and later with kindness instead of cruelty. We touch them and we touch their children and their children. This knowledge also gives the teacher at heart hope instead of disparity.

“To teach is to touch a life forever.” Author Unknown

* Whether you think they deserve it or not, do you have a smile for your
student’s today?

* Are you willing to take the opportunity to complement five of your students
today?

* Whether or not you feel like it, are you willing to help your students have a
pleasant day?

If you can find it in your heart to set the foundation, they WILL follow; and they will follow in all areas of their lives.

“I AM A TEACHER, I STAND ALONE EVERYDAY, ENCOURAGING SOME THROUGH SMILES AND PRAISE, OFTEN WIPING TEARS AWAY.” ANGELA BYNUM

To our educators: Enjoy the Impact

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

As educators we make an impact on the lives of others everyday. This impact does have to be painful. It in fact, is sheer delight for some of us. Our work may not necessarily be appreciated all the time, but when we pour our passion into what we do, somebody will benefit. It brought tears to my eyes when last summer a young man I taught years ago knocked on my door one summer Saturday. He had with him his 5 year old daughter and a complement for me that mended my broken heart for teaching. I impacted him many years before and the Lord used him to impact me last summer. I was able to get back on track and begin to do what I do best again; that is impact the lives of others. We may not ever get a chance to see the impact we have had on our students’ lives, but know that one day they will tell their children and their friends, or even their students about you and what you did for them. This will happen even with those with whom you ‘fight’ everyday, right now. Later, they will remember something you said that they are ignoring at this moment. Educators, I invite you to keep up the good work. Try everything that will benefit your students, and don’t give up on them. They need you, whether they show their appreciation right now is neither here nor there. They need you. Keep up the good work, though I know it may be painful!

“To teach is to touch a life forever” You are reaching a least one, therefore; you are touching that life for the rest of his or her life. How awesome is that? …and guess what…you are doing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me be the first today to thank you for the work that you do with y’our’ children. You are valued.

Where is the Teaching and Learning?

America arrogantly possesses pride in remaining a power to reckoned with and as citizens we don’t always agree with her tactics. Yet, despite its affluence, this nation has a child poverty rate greater than any other industrialized nation. This country’s poverty rate is 6% higher than other Western countries. Other industrialized countries average an overall poverty rate of approximately 10%.

Moreover, 30% of America’s impoverished families are African American. Upon investigation of child poverty, it appears that African American children continue to live in impoverished families. Data insinuates that many children of nationalities who live in America poor, but there is evidence that says African American children are poorer than any other race, historically. A major factor that contributes to poverty is inadequate education.

Does Culture Impact the Educational Process?

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

March 2, 2008

Culture is key in the academic achievement of African American children.
Given this phenomenon, culture is our medium; it is first, last, and always. Culture determines parents’ attitudes about their children’s education and their relationships with their children’s teachers. It determines attitudes about discipline, expectations, behavior and child development. It determines our ability to endure and accomplish. Because of the significant relationship between culture and educational achievement, a child’s own culture influences achievement and success, thereby, combating generational poverty and academic failure.
