How did I get to this place?

I moved from the West Coast to a city in the Mid-West four years ago. I thought working in an inner city area would be a good place to be useful, since I love teaching children. I wanted to really help children in the inner city rumored “unteachable” in by some educators on the West Coast.
So, my family and I relocated. We eagerly awaited what great things we would experience in our new home. However, never did I ever imagine four years ago when I became part this particular urban school district that the experience I am describing would be mine. This spring a student assaulted me. The student was suspended and five days later he was sitting in my class, appearing to gloat.
Our school’s administration changed a few months prior to the incident. This new administration had no idea of student’s history, nor did they seem interested. As far as they were concerned, every child started with a clean slate when both school heads changed. However, we the teachers did not buy into that philosophy. Needless to say, we had no support. We did not matter. (Continue Reading …)

    Dispelling the Myths

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

Adults today, almost always approach our youth with apprehension and misconceptions. They “our” youth and we fear them. The tables have turned. We feel more foreign approaching them than ever before. We hate their music….remember, our parents hated ours too. My mother cringed when she heard Curtis Mayfield shout…the ‘N’ word from my room, then he called members of the Caucasion race the ‘H’ word,… she feared for our lives.

    LOL LOL

Though this generate takes everything much further to the left than we had courage to. At the same time we have to ask these two questions. Who introduced it? and Who allowed it? Not only that, if we really examine the issues. We also rebelled. We bucked agains authority. I grew up during the turmultuous 60’s. We remember how it was back then. The brothers and sisters in The Black Arts Movement, rebelled through the arts.

The young people from other nationalities rebelled and became hippies. I am sure if someone reading this blog would take it upon themselves to conduct a bit of research, we would discover that youth from other nations of people living in America also rebelled.

Adolescent rebellion is a way of life. It is partly because of the hormones of an adolescent are raging and out of control. It is normal and natural. Dust off your psychology books and refresh your memory…and do you remember that according to the books, adolescence lasts beyond 18 years old? One of the difficulties with today’s adolescence is that we don’t cook for them. Our mothers did not feed us so much junk food. We didn’t eat out that often. Who could afford to? My mother nor any of my friend’s mothers were too busy not to cook us something to eat…fresh…meat newly cut not frozen…green vegetables…no boxes…no packages…few cans. Our children as a whole are malnutritious. They are inadequately nourished.

    Debt Free Parenting Tips

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

Spend More Time With Your Children

Debt records have reached an alarming rate. It is time for all of us to re- evaluate our debt and plan ways to get rid of it. Millions of people have transformed their debt obligations into a learning experience, and have been successful at becoming debt free. It is important to be debt free since severe debts might lead to lawsuits, loss of property, spoil your credit reports, and stressful family living.

One reason our youth are in dire trouble is that we don’t spend enough time with them. Too many parents spend too much time working and trying to make ends meet that they literally don’t have time for their children. Children are raising themselves or each other and they are highly influenced by television and other media.

There are many good answers to this question. The answers offered to you today are tri-fold.

    1. Change your mindset. Think about your financial situation in a different way. Become free of the poverty mind that keeps many of us in debt in the first place. One answer for doing this lies in the confines of this email.

    2. Plan to spend you money, and plan it well. Include everything in your plan including recreation and relaxation. Then work your plan, carefully.

    3. Create your own or join some sort of saving plan. There are many to choose from based on your personality and lifestyle.

    Summer Fun

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

10 Tips to help keep your children busy the rest of the summer

  • Have them help an elderly family member, neighbor, or friend.
  • Some residential camps are still taking enrollment. Some even have partial scholarships for parents like me who can’t afford it. Just ask….you never know!
  • There is a lot of adventure and much to be learned from just reading a book. I have experienced a child’s overall grade point average as well as standardized test scores increase drastically simply by making regular reading a habit.
  • The neighborhood YMCA, YWCA, Park Districts, community center, and some churches have activities and classes for children all summer. Seek them out….you will be pleased.
  • Baseball, soccer, softball, swimming class…some still have openings.
  • Organize a neighborhood clean up campaign.
  • Let your child experiment with the computer-parental controls in place- there is so much to see, hear, and do in the cyber world.
  • Watch movies with a critical eye….conduct movie reviews…give them ratings, include reasons for the ratings, and have your child post them online…they can even conduct research on the directors….interesting!
  • Journaling – it used to be common to keep a journal. Miraculous things happen when a person keeps a journal. It comes with personal power and self-empowerment.
  • Go for a nature walk, in different areas. Watch the variety of bugs, animals, trees, grass, flowers, rock formations, and even the wild flowers and weeds. Look up into the sky and watch the many times God changes his curtains, the clouds. We all need to learn to appreciate His creation.

My 13-year-old daughter was blessed to have been given a scholarship to attend a two-week residential camp at Camp Kupugani. last summer. She reported that the campsite was a great place to visit. She said the counselors were helpful and very caring. Naamee reported that she was made to feel more comfortable talking in public and making new friends. This was her first time engaging in activities such as fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, archery, and other adventurous activities. She seems more confident after her experience at camp Kupugani. Naamee had an absolute ball! In her last letter from camp she states, “I LOVE THIS PLACE.”….And I thank owner and director, Kevin Gordon for his generosity and his patience. 9342_1e78d20d-fa0e-48f3-b36f-9dfb5de80e60.jpg 9342_16249efa-b109-46e0-8972-ee1631cce2ef.jpeg Scholarships Enable Kupugani Campers

    Encourage Summer Reading

Written By Michelle R. Yisrael — Category: Let's Save Our Children

    Dear Parents:

Your child’s next teacher would like your help. Here is what is needed. Encourage your child to read. Summer has just begun and there is plenty of time for reading. Be sure to schedule it into your child’s daily routine. Elementary school students should read 2-3 hours each day. High School students should read 3-4 hours daily. Reading time can be scattered throughout the day or completed all at one time.

The purpose of summer reading is:

    *to promote continuous reading habits,
    *to encourage reading for pleasure,
*to establish a springboard for classroom discussion
    in the fall,
    *to improve overall academic achievement.

Summer reading develops independent readers who will continue lifelong reading habits. Readers find personal value in reading and sharing good books. Research proves that reading boosts a students overall grades in all subject areas including mathematics and computation. Recognizing the interest of parents in their children’s reading development, parents are encouraged to nurture that development and to make recommendations to their children throughout the year. Provide a variety of books, fiction, nonfiction, everything.

Teachers will see your efforts and appreciate it. Better yet, you will see an improve in grades this fall. That is the best part.
