Encourage children to read comfortably and in a relaxing manner. In order for students to excel he or she needs to be encouraged to make reading part of his or her daily routine. These are 10 tips for encouraging your child to read.

1. If he or she is unable to read 5 or more words on the page, assume the book is too difficult and find one that is less
difficult. In order to enjoy reading a child does not need to struggle with a book.

2. Allow he or she to pick his or her own books, they need to read a story they actually enjoy.

3. Read to your child, it will improve listening skills and act as a catalyst to broaden their interest and improve vocabulary; it also improves vocabulary.

4. Take turns reading, this is very useful. It is called supportive reading approach and allows you to gauge whether
your child can either pronounce words effectively or understand the content. Taking turns helps with accuracy.

5. Discuss the content of the book with your child. Talk about the cover and the pictures.

6. Describe what is actually happening in the book as well as what might happen.

7. To encourage critical thinking skills, talk about: what could happen if…

8. For new or struggling readers, run your finger along the line of print as the words are read.

9. Ask the child to retell the story in his or her own words to increase comprehension.

10. Silent reading is imperative – encourage it regularly. Children need to be able to read independently in order to
learn to enjoy reading. Independent reading also increases skill, fluency, comprehension and empower them to read
for pleasure. This is the place where real learning takes place.
